Class Descriptions

Introduction to HTML/XHTML

This class covers the basics of HTML and XHTML, including markup elements and techniques, elements of Web page design, online publication tools and strategies. In addition, it includes numerous hands-on examples, exercises, and guided Website tours. Students will also be exposed to XHTML syntax, and HTML to XHTML conversion. This class represents an exact analog of the 16-hour "Introduction to HTML" class, developed for classroom delivery at Austin Community College from 1996-2000, and is kept completely up-to-date with the latest HTML standards, tools, and techniques.

Intermediate HTML/XHTML

This class covers advanced HTML topics, including frames, tables, animated graphics, client- and server-side image maps, a survey of potentially interesting Web technologies (Shockwave, RealAudio, and various video formats), plus use of advanced HTML authoring tools. This class represents an analog of the 16-hour "Intermediate HTML" class, developed for Austin Community College from 1997-2000, and is also kept completely up-to-date with the latest standards, tools, and techniques.
Advanced HTML/XHTML Topics

Offerings in this area vary with student demand and instructor expertise, but recent topics include Dynamic HTML, Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), Web Site Management and Maintenance, and XML. Each advanced topic usually represents 3-4 hours worth of classroom training, with considerable background reading, online exercises, and mastery tests to confirm learning of the material. These topics represent the results of LANWrights' research and writing for recent books, and for workshops and tutorials delivered at NetWorld + Interop and MacWorld Expo.
Introduction to XML

This class introduces XML syntax, and covers Document Type Definitions (DTDs) and the XML Schema language. This content covers the same ground as the 16-hour "Introduction to XML" class developed for Austin Community College in 2000. The content is kept completely up-to-date with the latest standards, tools, and techniques.

Intermediate XML Topics

This class covers XML presentation control mechanisms. Both Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) and the Extensible Stylesheet Language (XSL) may be used to add style to XML documents. More recently, the Extensible Stylesheet Language Transformations (XSLT) has taken the Web by storm, and is covered extensively here. This content covers the same ground as the 16-hour "Intermediate XML" class developed for Austin Community College in 2000. The content is kept completely up-to-date with the latest standards, tools, and techniques.

Advanced XML Topics

Offerings in this area vary with student demand and instructor expertise, but recent topics include XML linking, database integration, programming concepts, the XML/e-commerce connection, and company case studies. Each advanced topic usually represents 3-4 hours worth of classroom training, with considerable background reading, online exercises, and mastery tests to confirm learning of the material. These topics represent the results of LANWrights' research and writing for recent books, and for workshops and tutorials delivered at NetWorld + Interop.

TCP/IP for Webmasters

This course covers the basics of the Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol, a collection of powerful protocols and services that make Internet communications possible. This class covers a bit of basic history and background, various networking models for TCP/IP, IP addressing (including subnets and supernets), IP security, and various important TCP/IP application-layer services important to prospective Webmasters. These materials are also used to teach an 18-hour in-class course on TCP/IP.
